As I have written about recently, the job market is in a state of significant change and uncertainty at the moment, and my personal circumstances are a reflection of that.

At the end of this week and after 7½ years, I will be leaving Deltatre for, well, nothing right now, and while that is scary and liberating in roughly equal measure I think it's also an opportunity.

One thing that I think is genuinely changing is the type — or shape — of individual that brings the most value, and I think (and hope) that this favours people like me.

The T-shaped individual has been a stalwart of tech teams for years (decades, even), but I think it's time to change the typographic analogy. It's time to be more tree-shaped.

Most of the conversation around AI today is anchored in the near term.

Engineers are asking how it changes their workflow. Product teams are experimenting with copilots. Founders are looking for leverage. There’s a steady undercurrent of anxiety about junior roles disappearing, but it tends to be framed as a tactical problem, something to manage, mitigate, or route around.

I’m less focused on that layer.

Not because it isn’t important, but because it feels like we are still looking at the first-order effects of a much larger shift.

I had meant to write this exactly three weeks ago to coincide with both my two-year anniversary in my current role at Deltatre and also the anniversary of my last day working "as normal" in the London office, but then I had too much other stuff to do, so here we are – a bit less timely, but still…

It would be fair to say that the last year has been... unusual. We've all had to suddenly adapt to a "new normal", whatever that means!
