In recent months (and years) I have written about hitting those predictable institutional thresholds — the natural cycles where a senior technologist begins to look at the horizon and ask what comes next. I’ve joked openly about midlife crises, analyzed the predictable patterns of the seven-year itch, and questioned what it means to be a "veteran" in an industry that routinely worships youth.

Now, with my current role coming to an end on 31 August, I’m looking at a very specific set of numbers.

When I wrote about my career history late last year in The seven year itch, I called out a few of the projects that I have worked on, but I have been doing some introspection recently as part of updating this site, and realised that I have worked on some incredible projects that I should take more obvious pride in.

I realised recently that I have now been working at Deltatre for as long as I have worked for any company in my career so far - 6 years and 9 months.

Even if I quit tomorrow my notice period would see me past the 7 year mark, which led me to think about why I have moved on from relatively long-standing employment in the past, and the 7 year figure in particular.

These realisations and questions to myself, along with some recent pondering about age and career direction, led to me wondering what I would want to do next if I decided to move on.

I turn 50 today.

The reason I mention this is because I have seen a lot of people — mostly on LinkedIn — making dire prognostications that anyone over that age will never work in IT again if they're not currently in work, and that gave me pause for thought.

It's been 11 years since I last wrote about a potential mid-life crisis and career change, and as I'm now a mere month away from my 50th birthday it seemed like a good topic to revisit!

I have been thinking a lot about AI recently — probably because every other post on LinkedIn is some kind of regurgitated AI think-piece, and every unsolicited email at work seems to revolve around AI strategy — and what it means for our current working practices.

I went to a university reunion recently - ostensibly to celebrate the 50th aniversary of the founding of York University, but mostly to catch up with the old York RAG crowd with whom I spent most of my 3 years as an undergraduate.

Since I was a kid my only real career aspiration has been to become a Bond-style villain and hold the world to ransom. Is that so much to ask?
